Irony

I was driving down Johns Road on Thursday night to pick up my daughter from her friend’s house when I saw a guy pedaling north on what looked like an entry-level mountain bike.

He was moving fairly slow and looked like a recreational rider on an evening cruise. His slacks and collared shirt certainly weren’t designed for performance on a bike. His stem rose at a steep angle so he could sit up straight and comfortable, which was the perfect position for him to ride with one hand as he held two fingers to his lips and pulled a good long drag off his cigarette.

And he was wearing a helmet.

A helmet. While smoking a cigarette.

In fairness, the crap coming out of the back of your car will kill about quite a bit faster than tobac. Three minutes of sucking on tailpipe = death. You can suck on cigs for ages before you get cancer.

You don't get to complain until you go totally car free in Anchorage, like I have.

Well, in fairness, I try to minimize my driving, keep my modern car well-maintained to minimize emissions, and I have never sucked on my tailpipe.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

About a month or so ago I saw a guy smoking a cigar pedaling down Wisconsin Blvd. near Lake Hood. He however, was not wearing a helmet.

I used to be that guy 8 years ago until I quit smoking.

You oughta see the stares I get when I ride my Kona chopper around the neighborhood with my BMX helmet....

In our group of almost 30 riders. We have a guy who can ride with any of us, and lights up between taking pulls on the front.

Weird stuff.

In all fairness to Tim -- I didn't catch anything of a sermon in the nice ironic twist found in the guy smoking while wearing a helmet on a bike.

Later, when that guy is carrying an oxygen tank with him on the bike -- the helmet will probably still be a good idea.

Seems like everyone who smokes is always trying to quit.

Ever hear of a biker who's trying to quit?

(not that it would be any easier.)

...riding that is.
