Sharp eye, Chris. Yup, that's a cast, in a photo taken by Brendon's dad (a doctor) while he paused on the trail with his wife and Brendon's mom (a pediatrician).
The irony of two doctors taking a kid mountain biking with a broken bone was pointed out to them a time or two when they were e-mailing photos to friends while they were still in Moab!
